What can an average tourist do in Egypt? Lying on a sandy beach, either diving or fishing. Would you like to hitchhike around this country, or rent a car? The vacation will be exciting. Hurghada and other tourist cities are of the same type, noisy and very boring. It's impossible to understand people who stay there for weeks and call it a vacation.,
The first hitchhiking trip showed: that this is not an option for us. It's scary to drive with the locals, because they drive like hell. It became clear to us: we need to rent a car.
It turned out to be very difficult to find a car for long-distance trips. There are many companies for car rental. But either there is no insurance, or you need to leave your passport as collateral, or they just don't give cars to foreigners. Soon we found a company whose terms were a little comfortable. It was difficult to arrange a car rental, but it is possible. After long negotiations, with the help of gestures and drawings, they brought us, as it were, a new Kia Cerato, to our joy we did not check the car and went on our journey. But the joy didn't last very long. The car turned out to be "killed", if you believe the instruments, then it is less than 10 thousand kilometers away, how it was possible to "kill the car" like that is a mystery to me. As the engine revs up, black smoke billows out of the exhaust pipe, stalls at any time, the steering knocks, and the suspension is badly broken. When they found a hernia on the wheel, they decided that they needed to go back. They asked to give us another car, the Egyptian did not understand at all what we were not satisfied with and found some person who spoke a little English. We decided to go see another one: Cherry Tiggo. The crossover is much more suitable for our trip, but the car just wouldn't start. We started demanding a refund to go look for another company. The Egyptians got nervous: they didn't want to give away a tidy sum. An hour later, a Chevrolet Lanos was brought to us! It was all crumpled on the outside, the cabin smelled of gasoline, but it starts immediately, the engine works well, the suspension did not knock, there was no steering wheel knock. We decided that we would take it and moved along the coast towards the south.
It soon became clear that most gas stations do not have gasoline. At the only gas station with gasoline, no one speaks languages that we understand, the numbers are Arabic. We waited until the car that would be refueled with gasoline pulled up and refueled from the same pump. Then they refueled according to the same scheme.
Tourists really like to scare us that it is absolutely impossible to drive in Egypt, do not listen to them. What happens on the roads only seems terrible on the surface, but in fact, drivers here are much more polite and disciplined about their rules than in Moscow. The roads are practically good, sometimes unexpected and very dangerous pits come across in remote parts of the country.
After driving about 350 kilometers south along the coast, we decided to drive through the desert towards the Nile. We were scared of wars, revolutions, evil Bedouins, and generally strongly discouraged from leaving the tourist area. We resolutely began our journey inland. We guessed about the tense situation by the military checkpoints that often appeared on the road.
The Arabs did not want to understand where and why we Russians were heading from the sea. They tried very hard to convince us at all the posts that we were lost. Apart from the roadblocks, which soon ended, there was a deserted road, and nothing else.
The desert ended absolutely suddenly: a roadblock appeared around the bend and a completely different life appeared. Lots of greenery, children, animals, three-wheeled motorcycle taxis, carts, etc.
We stopped in the Aswan region. The road has deteriorated, it seems that people with white skin have never been seen here, a local resident proudly gave us a whole branch of bananas at the railroad crossings. In the south, near the Nile, wonderful Egypt.
Without the tedious guides pestering tourists, without sand and sea, of course, and the hustle and bustle of the city, it gives the impression of a very distant Africa. A riot of greenery and flowers, a beautiful river, groves of palm trees. We decided to go back along the wonderful river, without returning to the coast. Discover
